Freeport: Bahamas Second City

Freeport is the second largest city in the Bahamas. It’s located 100 miles east of south Florida. It’s the city of 26,000 people and is a large port city for cruise ships and cargo ships.

Freeport was founded in 1955 when the Bahamanian government granted a concession for 50,000 acres of scrub land to Wallace Groves. Wallace Groves was the granted a concession to operate the free port for 99 years. That mean no taxes until 2054 on business income earned in the Grand Bahama Port Authority.

As a port city, it has some of the largest facilities on the eastern seaboard. They can handle maintenance on the largest ships. It’s a large cruise ship port as well. It’s on the itinerary of many cruise lines. It’s airports handle tourists arrival to this tropical destination.

Freeport is marketed alongside the name Lucaya. Freeport/Lucaya is one of the most popular resort destinations in the Bahamas and the entire Caribbean. It’s close proximity to South Florida and its spot on the cruise ship circuit makes it an ideal location to enjoy the great beaches, the great resorts and the great duty free shopping that the Bahamas is famous for.
